Exercise 3 Postlab

Q Exercise 3 Postlab Instructions: • Below is a list of the resources that you need to complete the Postlab Assignment for Exercise 3. • The correctness and effort of your work determines your grade on this set of activities. • This assignment should be completed individually. Any assignments that have been duplicated or plagiarized (in part or in total) will not be accepted. • Because many of you may not have experience with these types of activities, a grading rubric exists for you to use. o A rubric is the set of guidelines that instructors use to evaluate your assignment for a grade. o This rubric is the one that your instructor uses to grade your work. Powerpoint Slides: In this part of the Postlab assignment, you continue to build your final presentation for the semester-long Wolbachia project. • Report your work from the In-Class Activities of this exercise as information in MS Powerpoint slides. • You may NOT use Google Slides or any other software equivalent. • Your final presentation for this course will include these slides that cover this information. • Generate these slides in a separate file from the one that you created for Exercise 2 Postlab. o This file should only contain the slides for this Postlab assignment. • However, to stay organized, you may want to generate another file that contains all of the slides that you make, including the slides from this Postlab assignment and from Exercise 2 Postlab Part 2. o You can then edit the slides in this file based upon the feedback that you received from your graded Postlab assignments. o This will be the file that you submit as your presentation draft later in the semester. • Refer to the Powerpoint "Style Guide" to earn a better grade! Slide 1: Create a slide that contains your drawings of your insect. • On the drawing(s) indicate and label the specific structures and features that you used in the key to help you identify the Order of your insect. • For example, if you identified your insect in Order Lepidoptera, you should communicate on the slide that the insect has two pairs of fully-developed wings and long, coiled, tube-like mouthparts. These are the structures that are necessary to identify the insect as belonging to this Order using the key. • DO NOT write out entire couplets from the key! • Labels can be hand-written or typed in a textbox in PowerPoint: they MUST be easy-to-read. • Images should be clear and without distortion and should fill most of the slide area. Slide 2: Create a slide that presents the following information about your insect Order using these resources that provide reliable information about insects: UF Featured Creatures (contains peer-reviewed information) and/or Encyclopedia of Life (contains peer-reviewed information) • the habitat of insects in the Order • the diet of insects in the Order • the life cycle of insects in the Order • at least one unique trait of insects in the Order Slide 3: Insert a completed table (similar/identical to the one from step #11 in Part six on page 69) that presents information about Wolbachia infection in your insect Order: • You must include information from two peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles for your insect's Order and information from local insects collected by former BIOL 1107L students. The local information is available again here • o Don't forget to properly cite this data on this slide and in your final references slide. The full citation information can be viewed below the graph (personal communication) when you click the link to the data. • Be sure to include information about prevalence from all three sources. • You will also need to upload the marked copies of your 2 articles (as described in Folio, Exercise 3 Part six). Slide 4: Present your prediction about Wolbachia infection in your insect sample, and state your rationale for this prediction. • You should have written this prediction in step #12 on page 69. • You should state a prediction regarding the presence or absence of Wolbachia in your insect. • Remember that a prediction includes a method of testing AND a predicted outcome. • After your prediction, you should include the rationale for your prediction. • You should explain why you made the prediction that you did based upon the information about prevalence in the two peer-reviewed articles AND information about insects previously collected here by BIOL 1107L students. Slide 5: You need to provide references for your work in the proper format • The PowerPoint Style Guide provides directions for how to do this, and these directions are also detailed in for final slide under Exercise 2 Postlab Instructions • Your assignment will lose a significant amount of points if you do not follow these directions. • Create a numbered list of references on this slide. • Refer to the directions from Exercise 1 pages 13-14 for the proper format for citations, including citations for videos and lab manual chapters. o Remember to update author names and exercise titles when citing a lab manual chapter OTHER than exercise 1. • You need to revisit the slides you've just created (slides 1-4 above) to add small superscript numbers next to information that you found from sources, such as your lab manual or other provided sources. • Each piece of information that you gathered from a source for your slides should be referenced in this way. • The small superscript number on the slides next to the information should correspond to the numbered source on slide 5 from which you found that piece of information. Assignment Submission Instructions Save and name your file 1. Report your work as information in 5 MS Powerpoint slides. Details on what each of these slides should include can be found above. 2. Check yourself using the associated rubric (Exercise 3 Postlab Assignment Rubric). 3. You may NOT submit Google Slides or any other software equivalent. If you prepare your slides in Google Slides, be sure to download as a MS Powerpoint file before uploading to the postlab dropbox. Be sure to check that the MS Powerpoint slides are formatted correctly. You can see from the rubric that text and images not overlapping is required. Google slides are not formatted the same as MS Powerpoint slides. 4. Save your assignment in the appropriate file format as "Exercise3Postlab" followed by your three initials. (For example, "Exercise3PostlabGJD.pptx") 5. Upload and Submit your MS Powerpoint file to this dropbox (Exercise 3 Postlab Assignment Dropbox). 6. Don't forget that you were to upload your peer-reviewed articles from the lab part 6 into the Exercise 3 Postlab Assignment Dropbox also. 7. Importantly, when you upload your file, ALSO include a comment that describes how you have used your instructor's feedback from the Postlab from Exercise 2 to improve your work on this Postlab assignment. o This comment is evaluated as part of the grade on this assignment: not providing a thoughtful comment causes a grade deduction. You are now done with the module for Exercise 3. Questions? If you have a question about the tasks in this module, please submit it to the Questions for the Professor discussion forum under Communication > Discussions.
